Dec 16, 2006 PVS

The release of director Mani Ratnam's eagerly awaited "Guru" in Hindi and Tamil has been delayed. The new release date for the Hindu version is fixed for January 12, 2007. The dubbed Tamil film will hit the theatres on the same day.

The movie featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Aiswarya Rai and Madhavan in the lead roles was originally slated for release nationwide in the third week of December.

Actor Surya lends his voice for Abhishek Bachchan in the Tamil dubbing version. In the past both Madhavan and Aravind Swamy, introduced by Mani Ratnam, dubbed for other actors in Mani Ratnam's movies.

Bollywood star Mallika Sherawat has done an item number in "Guru".

Suhasini Mani Ratnam and Vijay Krishna Acharya have written the script for "Guru". Abhishek plays an ordinary villager, who tries to become a big industrialist in his life. Reports are that the movie is loosely based on the life of late Mumbai business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani.

The film, produced jointly by Mani Ratnam and G. Srinivasan, has been shot in Turkey and Badami, Karnataka, Chennai and Madurai.

Music is by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Gulzar. Vairamuthu has penned the lyrics in Tamil. Cinematography is by Rajiv Menon, choreography by Saroj Khan and Brinda.

Tamil audiences have shown great interest in "Guru" as Madhavan plays one of the lead roles in it.

Denying reports that he has donned a negative role in "Guru, Madhavan has reportedly said his character is a scribe who wants to do good to the people within the law.

Madhavan has attracted a lot of media attention. Introduced by Mani Ratnam in "Alaipayuthae", the actor has a large number of films to his credit. Notable among them are "Anbae Sivam", "Kannathil Muthamittal" and the latest "Rednu".

Mani Ratnam as his mentor has helped him shape his career, he says.

Rituparno Ghosh is among the famous film-makers with whom Madhavan is working as he is able to strike a right balance between classic and commercial cinema.

His film with director Rajeev Anchal and HIndi movie "Delhi Heights" have been completed. And he is set to work in a couple of Tamil films, including one to be directed by Vishnuvardhan.
