Veerey Ki Wedding review

Veerey Ki Wedding

Hindi · 2018

That there is a wedding, is given. And having Jimmy Shergill in the film gives it the half star it has earned. Jimmy bhai is earnest, but he has done this role so often, this film offers nothing new. The music is decent, but you've heard it all before. The characters of the shaadi are so many, and so predictable, it would be better to stay in and sleep.

Pari review

Pari

Hindi · 2018

The hallmark of a good scary movie is that the scares come at you from all sides, fast and furious and do not allow you to breathe. This movie is slow to create the scary world, and even though you enjoy it, it takes too long to actually make you gasp for air. But what an awesome beginning for Anushka Sharma and Parambrata Chatterjee.

Welcome To New York review

Welcome To New York

Hindi · 2018

When you watch award shows, you know the stars in the audience are cheering and clapping for something else. They use the footage from the IIFA show and include it on terrible green screens and edits to make a terrible copy of Mel Brooks hit film The Producers. This film fails to extract even half a guffaw, and proves that Karan Johar is better off behind the camera and not in the front of it.

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety review

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety

Hindi · 2018

'Bromance or Romance' is the underlying premise of the battle of the sexes film. Although it feels misogynistic to paint women the way they have in the film, it is so delightful and frothy and fun, you come away smiling. Are all girlfriends needy or plain manipulative? Will Sonu save his best friend Titu from his girl? What is true love? Do Punjabis drink and wed? The film is a tad too long, but has enough to make you finish gigantic popcorn tubs.

An Indian Army Covert Unit has gone rogue and threatens to expose Army-Politicians-Arms Dealer nexus, thereby exposing his own unit. The Covert Unit head goes undercover to catch him before he sells out. The goings on seem interesting enough and you know patriotism will win, but it takes almost three hours for this supposed thriller to unfold. If it weren't for Manoj Bajpayee, this tedious thriller would have been even duller than it is.

Kuch Bheege Alfaaz review

Kuch Bheege Alfaaz

Hindi · 2018

This film is about a grown-up woman who goes on blind Tinder dates, her friend-zoned pajama wearing bestie who works with her at a meme generating social media company, and a supposedly-popular late night RJ who spouts really smarmy poetry. The film is about connecting with a wrong number, whatsapp forwards, and really bad life advice. In other words, 'Hashtag One Tight Slap' for wasting the audience's time.

PadMan review

PadMan

Hindi · 2018

This is a dramatised biopic of India's sanitary 'Pad' man, who in his quest for making cheaper sanitary napkins for his wife, suffered socially, was ostracised and then ultimately acknowledged for his innovation. Akshay Kumar does a fabulous job as small town inventor but the story comes together only in the second half with the arrival of Sonam Kapoor who guides him to greatness. If you can endure the slow, unmoving first half, this film is socially relevant.

Kuldip Patwal: I Didn’t Do It !

Hindi · 2018

The concept is good: the common man always gets caught in the crossfire between politicians and big money. The execution, plain awful. Common man kills young politician, insists he didn't do it, the cops investigating think he might be telling the truth, and the courtroom melodrama that follows is the film. But so flawed you end up groaning and laughing helplessly.

Padmaavat review

Padmaavat

Hindi · 2018

The story of a beautiful, faithful queen and a lustful invader who will stop at nothing is told in three very long hours. The costume drama is beautiful and Rajasthan is a great setting for this tale of Rajput valor. But the talk of pride and glory is so endless, it makes you want to run into your sword out of sheer boredom. But Ranveer Singh makes a brilliant hammy villain, and Deepika is luminous.

Vodka Diaries

Hindi · 2018

It's one thing to want to make a psychological thriller and another to make it so badly that the audience begins to wish someone actually slap or beat up the protagonist. Kay Kay Menon. The whole film revolves around him, and even though Shutter Island did the same, there can be no comparison of that prison of the mind story with this ghastly, cheap remake that ends up looking like an episode of a TV crime show.

My Birthday Song review

My Birthday Song

Hindi · 2018

Is it is guilt for the one sexual encounter that keeps Rajeev Kaul awake or has he really killed the girl? The film is a psychological thriller which is rather interesting, but feels dragged despite its short running time of 95 minutes. Sanjay Suri looks traumatised enough as Rajeev Kaul but is that enough? This film has a decent supporting cast but needed a huge pay-off at the end. So much thrill for so little an end...

Kaalakaandi review

Kaalakaandi

Hindi · 2018

If you think a story like Delhi Belly could be replicated or something 'as cool' could be made, Kaalakaandi will disappoint you. Three random stories in one night in one terribly pretentious film that tries too hard. Fails.
