Karthi Shivakumar, younger brother of actor Surya is making his debut with this movie.

It is a story about a rural hero and is supposedly inspired by the life of reformer Paruthi Veeran, who lived near Madurai a few decades ago. His widow is portrayed in the film. The film is based on an incident which happened in the late 1970s. According to director Ameer, the film has nothing to do with real-life Paruthi Veeran though it has been named after him. The hero is an honest man fighting for the people of his village. Casteism forms an undercurrent. The story is a blend of realism with entertainment.

Karthi strained himself to change his complexion from fair to dark to suit the role of rural hero. Priyamani, who plays the heroine, though not wanting in glamour, has adopted her natural style of acting without any make-up. She had acted under top directors like Bharathi Rajaa and Balu Mahendra and done films in Telugu also. She wishes "Paruthi Veeran" would be another milestone in her career.

In addition to the regular cast, 60 others, who had never faced the camera before, performed in the film. All the artistes dubbed for themselves to give the movie the stamp of authenticity.

Cinematographer Ramji shot the entire film using only natural light. Ameer, who is famed for excellence, took more than one year to complete the film after taking it over halfway through. He has made movies like "Mounam Pesiyadhe" and critically acclaimed "Ram," the suspense thriller which won accolades at film festivals.

There is a wonderful collection of songs. Folk songs "Ooroaram Puliyamaram" and "Danga Dunga" (sung by Pandi, Lakhmi, Saroja and Kala) add to the comedy quotient. "Ayyayo Yen Usuru..." is sure to add another feather to the cap of Shreya Goshal.

"Paruthi Veeran" is one of the films releasing for Pongal.
